Deputy Commissioner Ellen Cohn Speaks to CALAS Membership on ESSA

On October 24, 2017, the CALAS fall general membership meeting was held at CAS. We had thirty-five participants and it was one of our best meetings yet. Members left well fed and energized. Deputy Commissioner of Education Dr. Ellen Cohn gave an informative presentation on ESSA and distributed an easy-to-read, one page, back-to-back handout. She also gave information on the Seal of Biliteracy and a document that provides guidance to districts on enrolling displaced children from PR. We also had Dale Bernardoni, the CT Managing Director of Fund For Teachers present. The hope is that members will return to their districts and seek teachers who would propose unique ideas for professional learning that will impact their classrooms and careers. They may be eligible to receive fiscal support to embark on a self-designed learning odyssey as a scholar, researcher, and adventurer. After pursuing scientific data, participating in seminars, volunteering with community organizations and/or observing best practices, teachers will return to the classroom as a lead learner to inspire students and school communities. Mr. Daniel Diaz shared with us an example of a Comprehensive Response to displaced children from hurricanes.

A retreat was recently held by the CALAS leadership and a 2017-2018 action plan was developed. This plan will be available shortly on the CALAS website at calas-ct.org. Committees will be formed to help with the implementation of the plan. There will be a professional development committee that will provide resources and supports for Latino students and English learners. The election process for new officers was reviewed. Members throughout the state are encouraged to think about becoming nominated. The current board is comprised of New Haven Public School administrators and the board feels strongly that the board needs to have representation from other districts in the state. The next membership meeting will be held on Thursday, January 11, 2018 (snow date – Tuesday, January 16). We look forward to greeting our present members and to welcoming new members!
