East Lyme Administrator Named Outstanding First-Year Principal

Congratulations to Jason Bitgood, principal of East Lyme Middle School and this year’s recipient of the William Cieslukowski Outstanding First Year Middle School Principal Award! Jason was selected for his strong instructional and managerial leadership skills and his unerring focus on the needs of his students and staff.

Superintendent Jeffrey Newton, who nominated Jason for the award, praised his capacity to lead from the heart and his mindset to always put others first. Upon assuming the position of principal last July, Jason immediately set about gaining an understanding and working knowledge of the 810 students in his building, immersing himself in teacher PLCs and data and team meetings. He also worked with staff to develop a comprehensive School Improvement Plan and established a partnership with the University of Connecticut to increase student engagement.

Upon announcing the award, CAS Assistant Executive Director Donna Schilke stated, “Congratulations, Jason! You have shown yourself to be a strong and innovative educational leader as well as a model for others. You are the whole package! Your efforts after one year are remarkable and your success as an educational leader will surely continue.”
