Ellington MS Named CAS School of the Year
Chosen from among several outstanding Connecticut middle schools, EMS has distinguished itself as a consummate middle school. Criteria considered included: culture and climate, standards-based educational programs, curriculum and assessment, community support, innovative instruction and strategies, teaming, professional learning, and personalization.
EMS clearly stood out as a school that offers a holistic approach to learning that is conducive to meeting the needs of all students; opportunities for learning and growth that go beyond the typical school day; educational programs that are consistently reviewed and improved; a welcoming, safe and healthy environment for all; and strong parent and community involvement. High academic standards are established and goals are met.
The EMS Hands-Up Program ensures that every student is connected with an adult member of the school community. The I Am Grateful Board reflects the school’s strong belief in the importance of the social and emotional well-being of middle school age students. Students shared particular pride in student-led conferencing and spoke positively of the efforts of their teachers both in the classroom and beyond. Shared leadership with staff is encouraged; and, when asked to describe their school in one word, staff responses were trust, engagement, curiosity, enthusiasm, and collaboration. A commitment to technology and 21st Century Skills was evident in all EMS programs. The overwhelming support by parents, staff, and students, and their numerous references to a safe, supportive, and exciting school were a confirmation of the success of EMS.
Under the leadership of Mr. David Pearson, EMS is a progressive and successful middle school. A sense of community, outstanding educational programs, and high levels of achievement together with a positive, safe, and healthy environment have earned Ellington Middle School the Connecticut Association of Schools’ Outstanding Middle School of the Year Award. Ellington Middle School will be recognized for this achievement at a school-wide celebration at the school on September 26th and at the September 27th Board of Education Meeting.
