CAS Mourns the Loss of Treasured Colleague and Friend, Janet Garagliano
The CAS family is deeply saddened by the sudden loss of our cherished colleague and friend, Janet Garagliano, who passed away unexpectedly on December 10, 2017. Hospitalized for what was originally believed to be a bronchial condition, the doctors discovered advanced cancer which required an invasive surgery from which Janet was unable to recover.
Janet retired as principal of Jonathan Law High School in Milford in 2011 following thirty-seven years of selfless service to public education in Connecticut. In her “retirement,” she continued to enrich the lives and learning of Connecticut’s students and school leaders through her work at CAS and, later, at CAPSS.
Janet’s history with CAS was a storied one. She became an active member in 1997 when she was principal of Wamogo Regional High School in Litchfield (Region #6). Energetic, industrious and unselfish, she served simultaneously on multiple boards and committees; accepted countless critical ad hoc roles; and, ascended to several key leadership positions within the association, including CAS Treasurer and chair of the Student Activities Board of Control. Without ever any expectation of gratitude or personal benefit, Janet was always willing to take on a new responsibility, always willing to give more of herself in service to the association and its members. In 2006, Janet was awarded the prestigious CAS Citation, the association’s highest honor. Noted then CAS President Donald Gates, “Janet’s presence on the various boards and committees on which she served provided us with greater vision and with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. She enriched us as people as well as professionals.”
Janet will be remembered not only for the scope and scale of her professional contributions but for her personal virtues of kindness, compassion and caring. She was, at her very core, a woman who cared deeply about others and who gave generously of her time, her talents and, above all, her heart.
We will miss her dearly.
Funeral services for Janet will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, December 16th, at Sacred Heart Church in Groton, CT.
