On Saturday, December 14, 246 middle-schoolers from 22 Connecticut schools traveled to Smith Middle School in Glastonbury for the CT Middle School Debate League’s first tournament of the season. Participants debated the motion: This House regrets the worldwide proliferation of surveillance cameras. Proposition prevailed in 49.2% of the debates.

The final round was won by Middlebrook Middle School’s team of Yasmin Athulathmudali, Grace Biondo, and Anagha Khisti on Opposition.  Jessica Mulligan from Westfield Academy was the top speaker.  Results can be found on Tabroom.com.

We are so grateful for the time and effort so many people put into running these events: Thank you to the English Speaking Union, Greenwich Branch for sponsoring the League; to John Rook and Antoinette Kisluk and their Smith team for hosting; to our coaches who put so much time and energy to prepping, running workshops, and judging; to Everett Rutan, Ashish Kale, Jennifer Hunt, and Garrett Flynn for tabbing; and, to the high school debaters and parents who judged.

Our next tournament will be held at Middlebrook Middle School in Wilton on Saturday, January 25.  We’ll debate the motion: This House would require corporate boards to have women members.
