Understanding Section 504 – A Legal Webinar

On May 6, 2021, CAS hosted a legal webinar on Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act featuring respected education law attorney Michael McKeon from Pullman & Comley, LLC.

Section 504 is one of the most commonly misunderstood legal principles in schools, often resulting in far more students being deemed eligible than appropriate. What is the three-part test under federal law for Section 504 eligibility? When and under what criteria should a student be deemed entitled to Section 504 protections? (hint — a doctor’s note by itself is not sufficient) Is there any difference between accommodations and modifications under Section 504? What are the similarities and, more importantly, the differences between special education and Section 504? Who is responsible for ensuring Section 504 Plans are implemented? How are disputes between schools and families resolved? In this webinar, Attorney McKeon answers these questions and addresses misconceptions regarding this oft-misapplied federal law.
