New London MS Recognized for Outstanding School Climate

Principal Chris Vamvakides, center, accepts the CAS Outstanding School Climate and Culture Award on behalf of his staff and students.
The Bennie Dover Jackson Multi-Magnet Middle School Campus of New London Public Schools has been recognized by the Connecticut Association of Schools (CAS) with the Outstanding School Climate and Culture Award. This award celebrates the school community’s collective efforts in fostering an environment where every member feels valued, engaged, supported, and safe. Bennie Dover Jackson is the first middle school in Connecticut to receive this honor in several years.
The rigorous award process began with a nomination and a comprehensive application submitted by the school. This application detailed the school’s culture and climate, providing extensive evidence of its positive impact on students, staff, and families. A CAS committee reviewed the applications and selected Bennie Dover Jackson for a half-day site visit based on the strength of their application. During the visit, committee members met with small groups of stakeholders, including staff, students, and parents, to experience the school’s climate and culture firsthand.
CAS Assistant Executive Director, Tiffany Caouette, presented the staff with the award and highlighted the school’s success in hiring effective leadership and staff, establishing robust systems, and cultivating strong supportive partnerships between central office, building leaders, teachers, and support staff. When presenting the award, she emphasized the shared vision of students, parents, and faculty, along with the numerous pathways for active contribution, ensuring the success of all. The award recognizes the school’s safe, warm, welcoming, and productive culture where everyone thrives.
“This very hard-to-achieve, competitive award is a testament to living up to our vision to ‘Unite in Excellence’,” said Superintendent Dr. Cynthia Ritchie. “The rigorous application process and the subsequent site visit demonstrate the depth of Bennie Dover Jackson’s commitment to a positive school climate. Congratulations to Principal Chris Vamvakides, Assistant Principals Alicia Ross and Andrew Lee, and to all of the teachers, Central Office, and building staff who work seamlessly together to put students first.”
Board of Education President Elaine Maynard-Adams added, “The entire district could not be prouder! When people care, collaborate, support each other, and believe in the amazing abilities of all, great things happen!”
Principal Chris Vamvakides expressed his gratitude, stating, “We are incredibly grateful that the Connecticut Association of Schools has selected us to receive the Outstanding Culture and Climate Award. The entire school community worked diligently on the application and we were thrilled to welcome the CAS committee to our campus. Our school community has undergone an amazing transformation over the last couple of years. I am so thankful that our students, families, staff, and entire community are receiving the recognition they deserve.”
Middle school teacher, Tracy Pisano, shared her enthusiasm, “I have been in education for 20 years. I have NEVER been so proud to be part of a team or happy to be at work every single day. New London is making it happen.”
