Nathan Hale-Ray Middle Recognized for Outstanding Climate
The Connecticut Association of Schools (CAS) has honored Nathan Hale-Ray Middle School in East Haddam with the Outstanding School Climate Award, recognizing its exceptional dedication to fostering a positive and inclusive environment for all students. This prestigious award followed a comprehensive application process and a rigorous site visit, during which a CAS committee engaged with staff, parents, students, and administrators.
During the visit, the committee observed firsthand Nathan Hale-Ray’s commitment to equity and inclusion. Diverse literature, engaging student showcases, and active community involvement were evident across all grade levels. The school’s foundation of clear expectations and restorative practices, which prioritize reflection and relationship-building, was also highlighted. Student leadership initiatives, like the Noisemakers Leadership Group and the Unified Kindness Campaign, exemplify the school’s focus on respect and accountability.
Beyond academics, Nathan Hale-Ray staff are dedicated to developing well-rounded citizens. Students are equipped with critical thinking, leadership, and problem-solving skills, while social-emotional learning, cultural responsiveness, and student voice are prioritized, ensuring every student feels valued and supported.
A strong partnership with parents is a key feature of Nathan Hale-Ray. Through the Middle Parent Advisory Committee, consistent communication, and personalized outreach, families actively contribute to the school’s climate. Parents shared with the visiting committee their experience of deep partnerships and a meaningful voice in school decisions, a level of engagement that often diminishes in middle schools but remains a strong characteristic of Nathan Hale-Ray.
For these reasons and many more, CAS proudly recognizes Nathan Hale-Ray Middle School as a shining example of a positive, inclusive, and student-centered learning environment. Congratulations to the entire Nathan Hale-Ray community for this well-deserved achievement!
