The Connecticut Association of Schools is delighted to announce John Ramos II, principal of Interdistrict Discovery Magnet School in Bridgeport, as the recipient of the 2024-2025 William Cieslukowski Outstanding First-Year Principal Award. This prestigious award recognizes a first-year principal who has demonstrated exceptional leadership and made a significant positive impact on their school community.

Principal Ramos’s leadership qualities were immediately evident as the school year began, marked by his compassionate and supportive response to a community tragedy. According to feedback from staff and parents during the award selection site visit, his presence and genuine support during this difficult time quickly fostered a strong foundation of trust within the school community.

Early in his tenure, Principal Ramos skillfully navigated district-wide concerns arising from social media threats. His calm and visible leadership provided reassurance to both students and families, further solidifying invaluable trust. His decisive collaboration with authorities also ensured the continued safety and security of the school environment.

Under Principal Ramos’s guidance, Interdistrict Discovery Magnet School has already seen the implementation of impactful initiatives. Collaborative Governance Committees, bringing together students, staff, parents, and community partners, promote shared decision-making and have led to tangible improvements in areas such as arrival and dismissal procedures, safety protocols, and overall school culture and climate.

The innovative College Takeover Days & Partnerships program introduces elementary students to the possibilities of higher education through visits from local universities, while also expanding the school’s network of community support. Principal Ramos has further strengthened the school community by building upon successful family engagement events like the “Back to School Picnic” and “STEAM Night,” and by empowering the Parent Advisory Council into a more influential and active body.

Upon learning of the award, Principal Ramos shared, “I am deeply honored and humbled by this recognition. This year has presented its share of challenges, yet our school community has come together with unwavering support for our students, families, and one another. It is a privilege to work alongside the incredible staff at Interdistrict Discovery Magnet School. This award truly reflects our collective dedication, resilience, and hard work.”

Principal Ramos brings a strong and well-rounded background to his role, including experience as an Assistant Principal and School Counselor, as well as deep engagement within the community through organizations such as Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and Adversity to Prosperity, 501c3. His past experience as a football and wrestling coach further underscores his ability to motivate individuals and build cohesive teams.
