High School Seniors Sought for National Youth Science Camp Honors

Governor Dannel Malloy invites outstanding Connecticut high school seniors to apply for a full scholarship to attend the 2014 National Youth Science Camp (NYSC) in Charleston, West Virginia, this summer. Delegates attend NYSC the summer after their high school graduation. Connecticut’s NYSC program is jointly coordinated by the Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) and the Connecticut Science Teachers Association (CSTA). Applications are due to CSTA on March 1, 2014.

The National Youth Science Camp is a residential science education program for young scientists the summer after they graduate from high school. Students from around the country are challenged academically in exciting lectures and hands-on studies, and have voluntary opportunities to participate in an outdoor adventure program, gain a new and deep appreciation for the great outdoors, and establish friendships that last a lifetime. The selected state delegates must not only demonstrate academic excellence in science, but also show potential for thoughtful scientific leadership. General information about the NYSC program is found at http://www.nysf.com/w/programs/nysc/faq/.

The National Youth Science Camp is made possible through the planning and fund-raising of the National Youth Science Foundation, a nonprofit organization with a mission to honor, sustain, and encourage youth interest and excellence in science by conducting comprehensive informal science education programs that provide opportunity for constructive interaction with others and emphasize the social value of scientific careers.

This year, the NYSC camp session begins in Charleston, West Virginia, on Friday, June 27, 2014, and ends on Sunday, July 20, 2014. The camp is located near Bartow, WV, close to the National Radio Astronomy Observatory at Green Bank. Delegates must be available to attend the entire camp session.

Application forms are available on the NYSC website at www.nysc.org and must be submitted online according to the instructions provided. Applications from Connecticut high school seniors are evaluated by a committee overseen by CSTA using criteria provided by the NYSC.

The all-expense paid, month-long experience includes lectures and hands-on research projects presented by scientists from across the nation; overnight camping trips into the Monongahela National Forest; and a visit to Washington D.C. Meals, lodging, and round-trip air passage on scheduled airlines are provided free of charge to scholarship recipients.
